16.05.2017

At the 16th Annual Conference of the International Competition Network (ICN), the ICN Steering Group re-elected Andreas Mundt, President of the Bundeskartellamt, as Chair for the term 2017-2019. The conference, hosted by the Portuguese Competition Authority, successfully concluded last Friday, May 12, 2017. Approximately 600 participants from 100 jurisdictions, including representatives of competition agencies, competition experts from international organisations, the business community, legal and economic professionals and academics attended this year’s conference held in Porto from May 10 to May 12, 2017.

Andreas Mundt, President of the German Bundeskartellamt:“We have good reasons to advocate for a world free of trade barriers because that fosters competition and is good for the consumer. Competition needs a strong advocate; it needs the strong voice of the ICN.”

The ICN is the most important network of competition authorities worldwide. It comprises 135 competition agencies from 122 jurisdictions. At the Annual Conference the past year's work products were approved, including new recommended practices for merger review, addressing notification thresholds, remedies and efficiencies; a framework for analysing unilateral conduct; guiding principles for market studies; a report on setting cartel fines and reports on agencies’ use of social media and agency staff training. All work products are available on the conference website and will also be published on the ICN website.

The Annual Conference provided members and other stakeholders with a forum for experience sharing, an informal venue for maintaining contacts to address practical competition concerns and allowed in-depth discussions of pressing topics such as the competition world’s answers to issues raised by digitalization and globalization.

The next ICN Annual Conference will be hosted by the Competition Commission of India in New Delhi from March 21 until 23, 2018.
