20.02.2017

The Bundeskartellamt has published a new edition of its information brochure "Effective cartel prosecution - Benefits for the economy and consumers".

Cartel prosecution is a key task of the Bundeskartellamt. The completely revised brochure explains the special challenges of cartel prosecution and shows that this arduous task is worthwhile in many ways for both the economy and consumers.

Andreas Mundt, President of the Bundeskartellamt: "Cartel prosecution remains a key area of focus of our work. The number of uncovered cartels has continuously risen in recent years and today proceedings are concluded faster than ten years ago. This brochure aims to provide an insight into our work. How do we uncover cartels? What role does our leniency programme play in this? How does international cooperation work? How do we set the level of fines?"

The updated brochure gives an insight into the case practice and investigative activities of the Bundeskartellamt. It explains key elements such as the revised leniency programme, the newly established anonymous whistle-blowing system and how fines are set.  The information brochure also deals with the opportunities and risks of private cartel enforcement through damages actions. For the first time it addresses the issue of compliance. Compliance programmes are used by companies to avoid competition law violations.

Cartels cause enormous harm to the economy. With the use of up-to-date figures and statistics the brochure shows the direct benefits of effective cartel prosecution.
