Bundeskartellamt clears merger between Friedrichshafen and Tettnang clinics

14.11.2014

The Bundeskartellamt has cleared plans by Klinikum Friedrichshafen to acquire Klinikum Tettnang.

Andreas Mundt, President of the Bundeskartellamt: "The investigations have shown that even after the merger patients in the Friedrichshafen market area will still have alternatives to choose from provided by the surrounding hospitals in Überlingen, Ravensburg and Lindau. The acquisition is therefore unlikely to significantly impede competition."

With 370 beds the municipal clinic in Friedrichshafen is the largest hospital in the Bodensee (Lake Constance) district. It is a specialist care hospital with 14 departments. With 140 beds the clinic in Tettnang is a primary care hospital with seven specialist departments which up to now has belonged to the private Waldburg-Zeil group.

On the one hand the merger leads to a powerful joint market position of the Friedrichshafen and Tettnang clinics in der Friedrichshafen region. On the other hand the authority's investigations have shown that with the Helios Spital in Überlingen, the Oberschwabenkliniken in Ravensburg and Asklepios Klinik in Lindau, Bavaria, there are competitors in the immediate vicinity which can considerably influence patient behaviour in the western and eastern parts of the market area. A reduction in services or quality of treatment in the Friedrichshafen and Tettnang clinics would cause the outflow of patients which would have had a negative effect on the hospitals' turnover and operational resuts. In addition to this, the range of services provided by the two clinics widely varies and Klinikum Friedrichshafen earns a major share of its turnover with patients who cannot be treated at the Tettnang clinic.
